HALO: Tony Richter’s photograph of the coloured halo of
light. See page 2 to find out what causes such a phenomenon.
By JASON MUNN
The bright ring of coloured light circling the sun you notice there is known as a 22° halo. The optical phenomenon was formed when sunlight refracted through hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere and was deflected at a 22° angle. Because light waveforms are of varying strength, the ring have appeared to be coloured with the inner edge reddish and the outer bluish.
